Lights show off a gorgeous yard at night

Install lights that will showcase your foliage and your house with a variety of lights large and small. They can outline the paths to your patio and driveway as well as bring attention to trees and other vegetation unappreciated in darkness.

A talented electrician can work with you on a plan to focus on specific areas, perhaps with uplights to bring attention to a stately tree, mounted garden lights to brighten planting beds, and flood lights to illuminate a larger area, but without glare.

Draw up a plan before you do anything. A blueprint or map should outline which areas you want to cover and how much light you want on them.

Tips

• Twelve-volt  bulbs are much more cost-effective than 120-volt bulbs and they provide plenty of illumination outside at night.

• LED lights cost more than halogen lights, but they last much longer and they don’t burn as hot as halogen. They’re also far more energy-efficient.

• Brighter is not always smarter. You’re creating ambience, not a police department interrogation room. Flood lights emit 700 to 1,300 lumens, but they should be used sparingly. Lights that accent landscapes need 300 lumens or less; path lights emit 200 lumens or less.

• Lights mounted in trees can cast a welcoming look down on decks, fire pits or other gathering areas.

• A transformer built for a 12-volt system would help handle the lighting if you have a large yard.

• Dig ditches at least six inches deep to protect the cables and eliminate trips and falls.

Timers and other smart devices can regulate the hours for lights.

Electrical Experts NYC can handle your lighting needs, indoor and out, residential and commercial.
